The Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri: women building better communities.
To help make a measurable difference in our community, the League has once again partnered with Avenue of Life (AOL) in Kansas City, KS for the 2016-2017 League year.
AOL is an ideal partner, as their mission is to mobilize the community to equip and empower low-income individuals and families to be self-sustained and independent. Plus, they love having the League’s support!
AOL offers several services, including counseling, parenting and GED classes, financial help, meals and more. The League’s main focus in partnering is to prepare frozen meals and to provide support during meal service, which solves a great need because according to Jessica Allin, Avenue of Life Chair, “Sometimes situations arise where having a week’s worth of meals for their family at home in the freezer that just need to be baked in the oven, can make a huge difference in helping them get back on their feet. At AOL, they are facilitating the journey from a hand-out to a hand-up.”
Allin says the AOL Committee is already off to a fantastic start! She says, “We have hit the ground running, already completing two meal prep shifts. The night of our first shift, we were able to help fill the new freezer that a company had donated. That same night there were doctors volunteering time to do sports physicals and we helped serve all the children and the families dinner that night!”
For League members, hours spent at AOL can provide a great opportunity to promote voluntarism at the center and at home! League members have found this placement/AMR hours can serve as a great opportunity to bring the kiddos along. Time spent at AOL also provides a great opportunity to continue the mission that kicked off our league – improving our community.
