The Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri: women building better communities.
In early October I attended a JLKCMO training, Fitting It All In: Time Management for Busy Women, at Headquarters. The short description sounded like a good fit for me – and probably every other Junior League member! Cynthia Kyriazis from Productivity Partners, Inc. – who also spoke at the Board retreat – facilitated an inspiring and challenging conversation about how we spend our time, distractions and ways to increase productivity in our lives. I took copious notes and wanted to share some of them with readers of The League Pulse.
Cynthia encouraged members to think about their time more than their to-do lists. She schedules all of the tasks that she wants to get done onto her calendar instead of tracking various lists. Her most challenging advice for me was to stop checking e-mail first thing in the morning at work. I’ve noticed that she’s right on that one! By leaving e-mail closed and taking care of the most important tasks of the day first, I work towards my priorities instead of someone else’s emergencies!
As busy women, we all wanted to know how to handle interruptions and balancing tasks at home with families as well. Cynthia says, it’s okay to say no! Probably something all of us need to hear a few more times for it to really sink in. She also repeated over and over again the importance of organization and preparation. According to Cynthia, five minutes of planning saves thirty minutes of doing.
Cynthia kept the evening lively by engaging attendees in a game to learn more about goals, priorities, scheduling and planning, communication, setting boundaries, delegating, procrastination, and getting organized. We loved getting to compete a little bit and learn as we went. She was a kind listener who answered countless questions from the group. There were JLKCMO members at various points in their League careers – New Members, Actives and Active Golds. Kudos to the Training Council for a fabulous training opportunity. I can’t wait to see what they have coming up for members in the second part of the year!
