The Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri: women building better communities.
We’ve looked back a couple of times at the amazing growth and impact of our Children’s Nutrition and Fitness focus area. At the May GMM, Healthy U Case Study results were shared with the membership, and during the past five years of our signature program, there have been amazing changes for Kansas City kids. The League helped distribute 34,760 BackSnacks with over 129,000 pounds of food. Children have shown more interest in being active, and they started asking for healthier snacks. To celebrate the connections that JLKCMO made across the Kansas City area over the past five years, the Junior League hosted a fantastic event at the Kansas City Zoo.
Healthy U, Healthy Me featured inflatables, hamster ball races, a magician, and a photo booth. A DJ and fitness gurus ran activities for kids, and there were of course healthy snacks for everyone as well! Heidi Hedges went above and beyond the call of her placement as Public Relations Coordinator to organize this fantastic event. The director of Community Impact from 2014-2015, Christy LaHood, described Heidi’s amazing dedication. Not only had Heidi double placed, also serving as (title) in 2014-15, she went the extra mile in both! She was the deserving recipient of a GEM (Going the Extra Mile) award in May, as well as receiving an Above and Beyond Award.
Students from University Academy and Junior League members and families attended the event and took advantage of the fun activities at the zoo. Heidi described talking to one mom from University Academy near the snack table. She told Heidi that she has arthritis and early stages of diabetes, and with some of the education she’s gained through Junior League activities she’s changed her diet and feels so much better. You could tell she was excited about it!
The feedback is in – Healthy U, Healthy Me was an active day with fresh snacks and loads of fun.
