A New Member Social
My sister Lauren is a new member of the Junior League this year, and I’m always curious about what activities she is participating in around town. Recently she went on a tour at Union Station designed just for new members to learn about the League’s partnership with Kansas City institutions and landmarks. These “Our League at Work” activities allow Lauren to connect with other JLKCMO new members and get an inside view of some favorite Kansas City places.
Each new member is together in a small group with other women who are a similar age or live near each other. Lauren is in one of two groups that are centered around the Plaza, and I know she appreciates knowing more familiar faces at all the large group meetings they attend or while they are volunteering. Their small group tries to do something social around KC about every other month, and recently they had an opportunity for food and fun with the chef from Magnolia’s Contemporary Southern Bistro , Shanita McAfee.
The ladies had a real treat as they were able to prepare some small dishes together and learn from an excellent chef. Lauren told me that everything was delicious, and the women ate every bite of the pimento cheese. Shanita let them sample her famous sweet tea but wouldn’t give any clues about the secret recipe. They were able to take home some great recipes, and I’ll be requesting my sister make that pimento cheese as soon as possible! Smoked Gouda Pimento Cheese
2.5 C (10 oz.) grated smoked Gouda
3/4 C homemade mayo
3 T finely chopped red pepper
3 T finely chopped green onion
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
Salt and pepper to taste
Stir all ingredients in a mixing bowl until they are well mixed and creamy. Taste carefully for all seasoning and adjust as needed. Cover and store in refrigerator until needed.
