The Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri: women building better communities.
Today’s post comes from Katherine Fowler. When she told me the great overlap between the Junior League and the Kappa Kappa Gamma Homes Tour, I knew it was a story we had to share with you too! Read on, and I hope to see you on the tour!
The Kappa Kappa Gamma Kansas City Alumni Association’s annual homes tour features four homes decorated by local florists… and showcases our League volunteers in action.
In its 63rd year, the tour raises funds for local charities. This year’s recipients are SAFEHOME, Johnson County’s only domestic violence shelter, and Kansas City Community Gardens, as well as the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation, which provides scholarships to sorority women. The city’s oldest homes tour, it has raised over 1.9 million in its 63 years.
This year’s Homes Tour board includes five Junior League women. The collective experience these women have had through fundraising experiences in planning events, selling tickets, and organizing resources has been a huge asset to our board. The leadership and committee positions we’ve all held in the League have prepared us for working with other women, donors, and volunteers, and have given us the tools we need to adequately manage a budget in a nonprofit, fundraising framework. Our organizations both focus on empowering women while raising funds and awareness for local charitable organizations, so the “work” we’re doing feels very similar. As the chair of the tour this year, it’s been a relief to rely on my own leadership experience gained in the League, and I’ve found reassurance in knowing I have well-trained, efficient board members who can make things happen!
Marissa Schaffner was a tour chair in 2011, and the homes of several Members and Sustainers have been included on the tour throughout its history. This year, one of the tour’s featured homes belongs to our own Rachel Sexton, President-Elect. The Kappas are thrilled to have her lovely home, decorated by Blue Bouquet, included in our event, and are glad for an opportunity to showcase an elegantly decorated family home.
